Coaching, Consulting, Therapy

Coaching is more often defined by what it is not than by what it is. Coaching is not therapy or consulting, for example, though it celebrates elements of each. Though coaches should be familiar with or are trained in areas of psychotherapy, coaching is not about treating pathology per se though it may offer therapeutic benefits. Certified coaches are ethically bound to refer clients to mental health professionals if they suspect the client may benefit from additional clinical assessment or support. This is an important consideration since coaches are often sought out when a client is struggling. Some clients develop relationships with both a therapist and a coach, and it’s often useful for these relationships to coordinate their efforts and understanding.  As a coach, I believe my client has the capability and resources to move forward. In a trusted partnership, clients are supported to become braver and clearer in their thinking and self-assessment-- and more humble-- and therefore better equipped to mine rich veins of their experience (past present and future) for clues to inner strength, long-term growth and resilience.
